What Is Ketamine?

Ketamine is an anesthetic drug that has been used for the past 50 years in operating and emergency rooms around the world. Over the past decade, research studies and patient trials have shown the incredible, almost instantaneous effects of low-dose ketamine in patients with chronic pain, depression and other mood disorders. Relief is rapid and has no lingering side effects, allowing patients to resume normal activities following treatment.

Why Use Ketamine For Depression?

Most antidepressant medications are only 40-60 percent effective and can take weeks to months to bring relief. Low-dose ketamine infusions have up to a 90 percent success rate, and help alleviate symptoms after just one 50-minute infusion.

How Is Ketamine Effective When Other Mood Disorder Treatments Are Not?

Patients with major depression, PTSD and other mental health issues are thought to have atrophied parts of the brain responsible for happiness, hope, safety, etc. Through its actions on the NMDA receptors and glutamate, ketamine has been shown to increase nerve regeneration in these areas of the brain as well increase activity between the nerves themselves.

Why Use Ketamine For Chronic Pain?

Ketamine can block and “reset” pain receptors in the brain and balance out important neurons and hormones by changing glutamate and GABA levels, simultaneously addressing the physical and psychological discomfort caused by chronic pain.

How Is Ketamine Effective When Other Pain Treatments Are Not?

Ketamine works in the spine and brain through a different set of nerve receptors. Essentially, ketamine allows the nervous system to relax, restructure and reboot, so pain is often relieved completely for months at a time. After ketamine treatment, many patients are able to decrease their doses of pain meds dramatically – some have been able to stop them all together.

“Recent data suggests that ketamine, given intravenously, might be the most important breakthrough in antidepressant treatment in decades.” – Thomas Insel, Director, National Institute of Mental Health
